In jurisdictions where paying directly to the national office is an option, is it always the best choice? Since it is possible to pay renewal fees for patents, trademarks, designs, utility models, and SPCs directly to the IP office in some jurisdictions, it may seem logical to apply the same approach wherever available to save costs. But just in case an issue arises, even in a single instance, it could be costly. Without a safety net to step in, resolve any problems, and ensure the renewal payment is processed correctly, the risks can quickly escalate.

In many jurisdictions, paying renewal fees directly to the official IP office is the best approach. It is cost-efficient, straightforward, and seamlessly processed. Where the system is reliable, paying directly provides an effective way to manage renewals without unnecessary intermediaries. However, in some countries, the process is not as simple. Various challenges ranging from administrative issues to operational barriers, can introduce risks that put the IP right at stake. In these cases, working with a trusted foreign agent ensures that renewal payments are handled correctly and without unnecessary delays.
